Nightmares are made of this

I probably don't have to tell you that lurking on the internet can lead you to some frightening stuff. Case in point are some early 20th century Halloween photos collected by this Flickr page that will forever haunt my blog...

{At least they'll curtsy before they kill you...}

{Thriller Night}

{AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!}

{WTF???}

{WTF???, part two}

Some of the creepy vintage shots above remind me of one of my favorite photographers, Ralph Eugene Meatyard. He had a way with imagery that made his photographs both disturbing and sentimental. Sweet dreams!

divine inspiration: Maya Hayuk

I have been a fan of Maya Hayuk's work for some time now, but recently came upon some of her newer work on a street art site, which leads me to this post. Her work reminds me of the playful colored pencil scribbles and paintings I used to do as a child. Hers are obviously more mature and awe-inspiring, as they're often complete installations in galleries or murals covering the sides of buildings. Her pieces ridiculous and psychedelic, and her titles are totally boss!

Ms. Hayuk created the piece below for the Democratic National Convention, of which she says, "The idea behind this piece was to invite people to be inside of this shouting, active mouth so they could feel like they are a part of the solution, rather than onlookers placing all their faith in a messiah-like politician." Whether you like that idea or not, the lady is one rad painter, photographer, illustrator, and designer. One of the comments on the Fecal interview (link below) says Maya's work is "inspiring like a unicorn fighting for its awesomeness to prevail." Enough said!

Now that's a street art message even your mom would approve! This epic 10′ x 25′ piece in South Brooklyn proves once again that graffiti can be beautiful and intelligent. Best public service announcement I've seen in a long time.

micro-fantasy

Just discovered this series, Micro-Fantasy, by Luke Twyman/White Vinyl Design. Luke's whimsical use of illustration and photography is so simple and charming. It's like a better version of Gulliver's Travels...love love love.

And how cute is that girl?!

happy friday

{Mr. Gus chillin' in his yard}

For the first time in a very long time, I will actually be relaxing this weekend! Date with Matt tonight, cookout and party tomorrow with my bestest friends in the world, and even a little family time on Sunday. All of this fun nicely counterbalances the constant level of stress I have been under the past few months.

So, without further ado, here's to the last days of summer!

i just can't get you outta my head...

As if Mr. Sofia Coppola doesn't have enough awesomeness in his life, his band has to write the catchiest song since I don't know when:

It's even been playing in my dreams!!! AAAHHHH! Seriously.

restless

Forgot how to count sheep...

{how many sheeples for me to fall asleep?}

I've been waking up in the middle of the night for the past few weeks now. Terrible nightmares haunt my brain as of late. SO OVER IT.

the american dream

Being back in suburbia for the past few weeks has been very odd...

{my temporary neighborhood}

In case you hadn't heard, Matt & I are in the middle of buying a house. My dad has been so generous as to let us stay with him, as our mortgage company has proven to be a bunch of incompetent fools who can't seem to clear a loan. Although I truly appreciate the hospitality, I'm beginning to feel like this is a never-ending game of Paperboy...

{WORST.GAME.EVER.}

Below are some amazing images of suburbia in the 70's (by documentary photographer Bill Owens) that I have been enjoying lately:

{Um...seriously want that station wagon!}

{Block Party!!!}

{Don't mess...}

Here's a trailer for a documentary called "The End of Suburbia"...foreshadowing, maybe?!
